Monette Larsen
“My current work is influenced by the underlying structures of corals, their shape, growth, and movement in the sea. In my sculptural pieces, I explore the mathematics of the coral shape, known as a hyperbolic plane, I create shapes that grow into their own during the process. I add layers of complexity through the making process by refining and altering the piece like the forces of nature alters the perfect model in the natural world” – Monette Larson
Monette draws on the imagery and wonders in the living world around us as a foundation for her work. She explores the idea that what we perceive as beautiful in nature is linked to the human conscious or unconscious recognition of underlying patterns and structures. She looks at molecular structures and mathematics while exploring her material and a variety of kilnformed glass techniques. She creates pieces that reference and hint at the natural world, intending the artwork to be a reflection on the living world surrounding us.
Monette holds a glass art degree from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and a Master of Art, specialised in glass, from The Royal College of Art. She has exhibited extensively throughout Europe and the UK and has artworks in the permanent collections of the Imagine Museum, St Petersburg, Florida, USA and the National Glass Centre, Sunderland, UK.
