Mark your calendars for an extraordinary ballet experience as Pacific Northwest Ballet unveils its brand-new production of The Sleeping Beauty, running from January 31 to February 9, 2025. This highly anticipated reimagining blends classical elegance with contemporary artistic vision, featuring scenic design by acclaimed glass artist Preston Singletary and costumes by Academy Award nominee Paul Tazewell (Wicked, Hamilton, PNB’s Swan Lake). With an astonishing 184 roles and 80 unique costume designs, this is the most ambitious production ever created by the PNB Costume Shop.
Artistic Director Peter Boal describes this new take on The Sleeping Beauty as an opportunity to explore the story’s deeper themes. “Our Beauty begins with a reexamination of the original source materials,” he explains. “Themes of good and evil, fate, and personal empowerment shape this production, alongside innovative interpretations of character and design. Preston Singletary’s vision transports us to an ancestral realm deeply rooted in North America.”
Singletary, renowned for his fusion of Tlingit heritage with contemporary glass artistry, draws inspiration from Indigenous storytelling. “This tale resonates with mysticism, transformation, and the triumph over supernatural forces,” he says. “It reminds me of Tlingit traditions, where symbolism and stagecraft intertwine to convey cultural values.”
