Raise a Glass to Barware Talk at TMATonight!

  • Most curator talks seem more academic than exciting but the Toledo Museum of Art has one coming up with a twist – it includes a cash bar and handmade glass objects
  • Beginning at 6 p.m. today, March 24, in the GlasSalon, Jutta Page, TMA’s curator of glass and decorative arts will discuss the history of barware and the multitude of functional glass objects used in the creation and serving of the perfect cocktail
  • The talk is inspired by the Toledo Symphony’s presentation of the “little orchestra” Pink Martini, which begins at 8 p.m. in the Peristyle
  • The talk is free and includes a cash bar with cocktails and other mixed drink classics
  • In keeping with the theme of the evening, TMA artists in the Glass Studio made a pink martini pitcher and an edition of pink martini goblets that will be available for purchase

Jonathan Davis Residency at TMATalk Tomorrow!

  • The current Guest Artist Pavilion Project (GAPP) resident artist at TMA is Jonathan Davis of Durham, N.C.
  • His residency is March 20 through 27, and he will give a talk at 7 p.m. tomorrow, March 25, in the GlasSalon
  • Davis uses the flameworking process to create a variety of functional and sculptural art; silica-based minerals, cold working techniques and a broad palette of glass color allow him to incorporate a variety of visual textures in his artwork
  • He began blowing glass in 2001 with an apprenticeship at the Carolina Glass Arts Studio in Durham; during that time he began designing and making his own production art as he was promoting and teaching lampworking classes through the Durham Arts Council; he has since studied with many talented people including master glassblower Emilio Santini
  • Davis now constructs botanically inspired creations and mid-century modern designs
  • He also runs the Locally Grown Art Studio in Pittsboro, N.C. and is teaching privately and through Central Carolina Community College
  • The mission of Locally Grown Art is to use glass art as a catalyst for environmental and social causes such as organic farming, alternative energy, sustainable practices and social justice; drawing the connection between local farms and artists has been an ongoing mission for Davis
  • Working with farmers and artists in the region has shaped his desire to educate people on the importance of supporting local farms and art alike and spawned his enthusiasm to teach and create art for the community through the Locally Grown Art Studio
