My creative process begins
with a leisurely stroll through my many books on the history of Asian art and
culture. What I see in their pages makes me dream of what I might create in my
studio. Dark Warrior, for
example, was inspired by the pictures of demonic motifs on the armor worn by
feudal lords during the Edo Period in Japan (1603-1868). This was a golden
age that lasted 250 years during which Japan was not at war, peace reigned and
armor was at its most beautiful, opulently designed to show status and wealth.
Drawing on the culture of this era gives me the freedom to conceive and create
the most extravagant and lavish armor.
The Japanese actor Tishiro
Mifune is the model for my warrior heads. Like Mifune, the leading man in the
Samurai movies of Akira Kurosawa, Dark
Warrior features a serious
countenance with eyebrows set in a frown. I work with shades of black, my
favorite color combination for these sculptures, because that palette allows me
to use a wide range of colored gems and the sparkle from the embedded crystals
enhances the overall effect.
PEARL:
2,000 years ago, Japanese women began the practice of
diving to the ocean floor in search of rare, natural pearls.
These divers were called "Ama," meaning women of the sea.
The pearl was the most expensive and sought after gem in ancient times.
Ever since, the pearl has been the symbol of unblemished perfection.
It is the oldest known gem and for centuries was considered the most
valuable. To the ancients, the pearl
was a symbol of the moon and had magical powers.
My sculpture "Pearl" portrays a woman of nobility and
her child during the Edo Period in Japan (1603 - 1868). Both mother and child
are resplendent in their court attire heavily embellished with pearls. The
baby girl is holding her tiger doll which, according to
the Asian Zodiac, symbolizes luxury, authority, and royalty.
